Mello Acres is Michelle’s family farm in Hanford, where she raises geese, ducks and chickens and grows dahlias. It runs on the same idea as the rest of this page: do it properly, let the season set the schedule, and keep it small enough to know every bird and every row.
The flock. Three breeds of geese: Sebastopol, with their long, curling, ribbon-soft feathers; Embden, big, bright white and sturdy, the classic farmyard goose; and Toulouse, handsome grey birds with an easygoing nature. She sells started goslings and hatching eggs for all three, along with Bresse chicken hatching eggs and mixed duck and chicken hatching eggs. Geese lay with the seasons, so goose eggs and goslings are only around for part of the year. Ask what is coming and she will put you on the list.
The flowers. Dahlias, cut in the cool of the morning and ready the same day. Single stems, mixed bunches, or whole buckets for people doing their own arranging, and she will plan around a date for a wedding, an event or a standing weekly order. Our warm Central Valley fall keeps the patch blooming after most growers are finished, and in winter she divides tubers from her own clumps for spring planting.
She also keeps a small herd of registered Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus cattle, and has two free guides on her site for anyone starting out: hatching chicken eggs, and raising baby chicks.
There is no shopping cart, and that is on purpose. You call or send a note, she tells you what is ready and what is coming, and you pick up at the farm or ask about shipping eggs. If waiting a few weeks or choosing something else would suit you better, she will tell you.
