The companies behind the work.

These are the companies we actually use to run this business. The material we spread, the lab that grades your soil, the shops that keep the equipment working and the trucks that move the loads. If a name is on this page, it is because we depend on it ourselves.

A soil program is only worth what is behind it. Anybody can write a recommendation. What decides whether it is worth anything is whether the sample went to a real lab, whether the blend is what the ticket says it is, and whether the spreader shows up. So rather than ask you to take our word for it, here is the list.

How this page works

Every entry says what our connection is, in plain words. Where we are paid by a company on this page, it says so on the card. Where nothing changes hands, it says that too.

Nobody bought a place here, and nobody is here as a favor. If we stop using a company, they come off the page.

This is not the same list as Trusted. That page is people and places we recommend personally, in and out of farming. This one is the working end of our own business.

Material suppliers

Where the gypsum, lime, sulfur, compost and biologicals come from.

Superior Soil Supplements

Soil amendments and custom blends, Hanford, CA

Soil testing and soil amendments out of Hanford, a few miles from our own yard. Compost blends, gypsum, sulfur, limestone, zeolite and water soluble products, along with the silos and applicators to put them out.

Local matters more here than it sounds like it should. A blend that has to travel the length of the state arrives when it arrives, and a program is only as good as the day the material actually lands.

Our connection. Bryan Mello also works as an independent salesperson for Superior Soil Supplements, so this is a paid relationship. We list them because we use their material, and you should weigh the connection for yourself.

Tesh Ag

Natural, organic and biological amendments, Hanford, CA

Teshuva Agriculture, which everyone around here calls Tesh Ag. Natural, organic and biological soil amendments, out of Hanford. We carry their material and sell it to our own customers, and when a program calls for something in their line, we write it into the program.

The referrals run both ways. We send growers to them when they are the better fit for the job, and they send growers to us when we are. That only works between two outfits that would rather the grower get the right answer than keep the work, and it is the part of this arrangement worth telling you about.

Our connection. Tesh Ag is both a supplier and a sales partner. We buy their material and resell it, we refer customers to them and they refer customers to us. They also share ownership with Esajian Family Farms, who buy amendments and spreading from us, so money moves in both directions between us. Weigh the recommendation with that in front of you.

Soil and water labs

Where the samples go. Every number behind every program we write starts here.

Brookside Laboratories

Independent soil and plant analysis, New Bremen, OH

An independent analytical lab that has been testing soil since 1937 and has run as Brookside since 1952. Their soil audit is the report sitting underneath every program we write, and the reason a recommendation can point at a number instead of at an opinion.

Using an outside lab is a deliberate choice. The company recommending the material should not also be the company grading the soil.

Our connection. No financial relationship of any kind. They run our samples, we pay them for the work, and that is the whole of it.
