Salmon is open, and the calendar is on our side. From Pigeon Point up to Point Reyes the season runs through Oct. 31, which is 25 days counting today. The stretch south of Pigeon Point closed last Wednesday, as scheduled. CDFW’s in-season changes page still lists Aug. 21 as its newest salmon action, with no change to the fall season. We read CDFW’s catch tracker directly this morning, and it still shows data only through Sept. 15: 7,585 caught, 12,415 left on the 20,000-fish guideline. The Sept. 16–30 estimate hasn’t been posted, so nobody outside CDFW knows the current number.
The boats are still finding kings. The northern fleet’s four-day tally, Saturday through Tuesday, is 203 kings on 146 rods, about 1.39 a rod. Tuesday alone was 70 on 47. New Easy Rider went 18 on 9 two days running, and California Dawn’s own post Tuesday read “Kings up to 26 pounds.” Those are the boats the count service listed. It may not list them all.
There are bluefin off the Bay. Monday Sorta Salty out of Bodega Bay came home with 10 bluefin to 65 pounds on five rods, two apiece. Scallywag out of Emeryville listed 6 on four rods Sunday, and Lady K listed 7 on six Tuesday. Down in San Diego, Pacific Queen’s three-day trip Sunday listed fish to 220 pounds. Dock totals are in the Ocean section.
New moon Saturday, and the tide lines up for it. The moon is new at about 8:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 by its true position, and the almanac puts the best fishing of the month around it. At the Golden Gate the evening low drops below zero three nights running: −0.06 ft at 6:43 p.m. Sunday, −0.11 at 7:21 p.m. Monday and −0.05 at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday. And Pine Flat is up 6,617 acre-feet on the week, to 16.4% full, after losing 555 the week before.

◉ This Week’s Best Bets
|
|
Bet No. 1 · Golden Gate
Kings, 25 Days on the Calendar
Four days, 203 kings on 146 rods. Saturday New California Dawn landed 24 on 15 rods, fish to 25 lb. Tuesday New Easy Rider and Reel Addiction 2 both limited, and California Dawn II reported fish to 26 lb. Open Pigeon Point to Point Reyes through Oct. 31 unless the guideline fills first. Call (707) 576-3429 the morning you go.
|
|
Bet No. 2 · Bodega Bay & Emeryville
Bluefin, Close to Home
Sorta Salty (Bodega Bay) put 10 bluefin to 65 lb on five rods Monday, two apiece. Scallywag (Emeryville) listed 6 on four rods Sunday and Lady K 7 on six Tuesday. The bluefin limit is 2 a person. Small fish by San Diego standards, and a much shorter drive.
|
|
Bet No. 3 · Morro Bay & Avila
Lingcod by the Limit, and White Seabass
Endeavor out of Morro Bay: Sunday 38 lingcod to 15 lb and 190 rockfish on 19 rods, limits of both; Saturday 49 lingcod to 17 lb on 28. At Avila, Sunny Day posted 7 white seabass on four rods Saturday and Patriot had 5 on 17. Central Coast rockfish stays open at all depths through December.
|
|
Bet No. 4 · San Pedro to San Diego
Yellowfin, and Big Bluefin
Native Sun (San Pedro) put 297 yellowfin on 42 rods Tuesday, about 7.07 a rod on a 3/4-day. In San Diego Pacific Queen listed 5 bluefin to 220 lb Sunday and Pegasus 11 bluefin to 200 lb on 11 rods Tuesday. The yellowfin limit is 10 a day.

⚠ Water Watch
Pine Flat gained ground. The Corps sheet (data through Tuesday midnight) has the lake at 164,123 AF, 16.4% full, up 6,617 AF since last Tuesday and up 1,312 on the day. The release averaged 249 cfs Tuesday, down from the 355 we reported a week ago. The Corps’ hourly report shows the release held at 249 cfs for the last 48 hours and the lake rising steadily, about 1,300 AF a day. That works out to roughly 900 cfs coming in, yet the gauge on the Kings below the North Fork, at the head of the lake, reads only 184 cfs. We can’t reconcile those two numbers, and the Corps itself warns its computed inflow is erratic. The storage gain itself is consistent hour after hour.
The south Valley lakes keep sliding. Isabella lost 3,948 AF on the week, to 25.8%, releasing an average 483 cfs against 241 coming in. Success lost 1,476, to 11.3%, and Kaweah 610, to 10.6%. Eastman (6.8%) and Hensley (7.4%) barely moved because there’s almost nothing left to move.
The foothill lakes are all dropping. The Corps’ Section 7 sheet carries current numbers for New Melones, Millerton and Bass Lake but nothing for Don Pedro, McClure or the Big Creek lakes, so we went to the state’s California Data Exchange Center (CDEC) for those. Through Monday: Don Pedro 74.9%, down 11,460 AF in a week; McClure 52.7%, down 12,140; Shaver 56.2%, down 5,222. Where CDEC and the Corps both report a lake (Millerton, New Melones), they match to the acre-foot. Golden Empire has Pine Flat Saturday, Kerman has Bass Lake, and Kings VIII has McClure Sunday. Expect trailers at all three.

Rows marked § come from the state’s California Data Exchange Center (CDEC), daily data through Oct. 5 (Merced flow Oct. 6), because the Corps sheet reported nothing for them. Change is seven days unless marked (14d). Percent-full uses gross pool.

§ CDEC provisional daily data. Where CDEC and the Corps both report a lake (Millerton, New Melones on Oct. 6) the two match exactly. ‡ Edison: Corps Section 7 figure for Sept. 22, fifteen days old; we didn’t find a CDEC station we could confirm was Lake Edison. ¶ Wishon and Courtright: CDEC’s newest reading is Sept. 29, eight days old. † Percent-full for Don Pedro and McClure is our own arithmetic against 2,030,000 AF and 1,024,600 AF gross pool; the Corps does not print a percentage for these two. Success uses the Corps’ 82,300 AF gross pool; we haven’t verified whether a dam raise has changed that figure. n/r = the agency reported no value. n/p = we hold no published gross-pool figure we trust for that project, so we don’t estimate one.

Bite Report
Same straight word. The weekly regional aggregator lists no reports this week for Central California, the Delta or the Sierra foothills. Search turned up Central California fishing columns by Dave Hurley, and we opened one. It reads as October 2024: late-October tournaments, November events still upcoming. A second column in the series (“Oct. 25–31,” McSwain and Courtright) carries no year we could confirm. We didn’t use either. What follows rests on verified levels, plants, permits and the usual early-October pattern. Where we describe a pattern, it’s a pattern, not a report.
| Water | What We Know |
| Pine Flat | Up 6,617 AF on the week, and still only 16.4% full, so the fish are crowded. The usual October setup: kings and rainbows under the shad off main-lake points early and late, bass on ledges, brush and bluff walls. Golden Empire Bass Club has the lake Saturday, Oct. 10. Launching is still the harder part. |
| Millerton | 43.7%, down 1,615 AF on the week, though it actually rose about 2,600 AF from Saturday to Tuesday. Spotted bass on finesse gear as the water cools; catfish from the bank after dark. No permitted event this window. Next: Kerman Bass Club, Nov. 7. |
| Don Pedro & McClure | Don Pedro 74.9% and McClure 52.7% as of Monday (state CDEC data, our percentages), each down more than 11,000 AF on the week. Fall pattern: trout and kings on the shad, bass deep. Kings VIII has McClure Sunday, Oct. 11. Nothing is permitted on Don Pedro this weekend; Bass Angler Inc. has it Oct. 16–18. |
| New Melones | 63.5%, down 9,217 AF on the week. Kokanee are finished as a target and moving to spawn. Trout and bass stay tough until the surface cools. No permitted event this window. |
| Eastman & Hensley | 6.8% and 7.4%, and the Fresno River gauge above Hensley reads not-reported. Eastman is the bass lake of the two; Hensley is catfish and carp. At these levels your first problem is getting the boat in. |
| Kaweah & Success | Kaweah 10.6%, Success 11.3% and still dropping, about 1,500 AF a week at Success. Small-water fishing: finesse plastics, minijigs for crappie, dip bait for cats after dark. Ducks Unlimited has Success Oct. 17–18. |
| Isabella | 25.8%, releasing an average 483 cfs against 241 coming in. No bass event is permitted on Isabella this month; the Copes Tackle date now reads March 20, 2027. No Kern section is on this week’s plant list. |
| Bass Lake | 69.5% (31,579 AF) and down 3,093 in 14 days. Kerman Bass Club has Bass Lake Saturday, Oct. 10. It’s the one Sierra lake of the group with a current level. |
| Shaver & Huntington | Shaver 56.2% and Huntington 79,624 AF as of Monday, both losing 500–1,200 AF a day (CDEC). Kokanee are in the inlets to spawn and holdover rainbows follow them for the eggs. That’s the usual pattern; we have no report confirming it this week. |
| Wishon & Courtright | State data stops Sept. 29 (Wishon 111,475 AF, Courtright 31,931). We found no current fishing report we could date. High-country trout water that fishes into October, weather allowing. Call ahead on access and the seasonal gates before you make the drive. |

Central Coast
Levels straight from the operators’ own live gauges this morning. San Luis Obispo County’s sensors report percent of capacity. Monterey County’s two lakes come from USGS elevation gauges, which give elevation only, so we show the 7-day change in feet rather than guess at a percentage.
| Lake | Level | Who to Call |
| Lopez | 78.9% of capacity, 39,038 AF, elev. 510.47 ft | SLO County Public Works |
| Santa Margarita | 87.2% of capacity, 19,458 AF, elev. 1,299.41 ft | SLO County Public Works |
| Nacimiento | Elev. 742.76 ft, down 1.04 ft in 7 days | Monterey County Water Resources Agency |
| San Antonio | Elev. 738.00 ft, down 0.70 ft in 7 days | Monterey County Water Resources Agency |
Santa Margarita’s capacity was cut to 22,320 AF by a 2024 resurvey, and the county’s percentage uses the new figure. Nacimiento (Gilroy Bassmasters) and Santa Margarita (SLO County Bass Ambushers) both have permitted events Oct. 17, and Golden Empire has Nacimiento Nov. 7–8.

◉ Eastern Sierra
Trophy trout are still being tagged and landed at Bridgeport. The Bridgeport Fish Enhancement Foundation (BFEF) logged Tom Harp’s 5 lb 7 oz tagged trophy trout, taken trolling, on Oct. 5, and Michael Royere’s 4 lb 9 oz on Oct. 6. Nearby, Twin Lakes logged a 4 lb 5 oz rainbow on a Thomas Buoyant lure on Oct. 2 (Mike Donohoe) and a CDFW-tagged 3 lb 14 oz rainbow off the lower lake on Oct. 1 (Rob Rall). At Saddlebag, a 7 lb 7 oz trout was reported Sept. 30. Those are individual catches the resorts and the foundation chose to post, so read them as proof the big fish are there, not as a limit-per-rod report.
Virginia Lakes Resort (Carolyn Webb, Oct. 5): the aspens are gold around the resort and the leaves have been falling for a couple of weeks. Dress for the season. Reminder from earlier reports: Big Virginia is a drinking-water lake, so no swimming, no gas motors, and no float tubes or boards without full waders. We found nothing newer this week from Crowley, the Owens or the June Lake Loop, and the only Eastern Sierra water on this week’s plant list (Oct. 4–10) is Bishop Creek, Middle and South Forks, in Inyo County.
|
⚠ The Regs Up Here Are Not the Regs Down Here
Inyo and Mono waters carry special regulations that change reach by reach on the same river. The Owens above a given bridge is not the Owens below it, and Hot Creek, the East Walker and the Upper Owens each have their own gear and take rules. Checking the statewide rules doesn’t cover you here.
A handful of Mono County waters, the East Walker among them, stay open year-round, and in the off-season those are catch-and-release, barbless, artificial lure or fly only. Most of the district runs on the general season, which closes in mid-November.
We still haven’t confirmed the exact 2026 closing date on CDFW’s own pages, so we’re not printing one. If you’re planning a late-season trip, read the Sierra District entry for your water in the current regulations booklet.

◉ Delta, Rivers & Aqueduct
| Water | Conditions & What We Can Verify |
| The Delta | No regional report again this week. What we can verify is the tide. The new moon pulls Port Chicago’s daily swing from 4.5 ft today to about 4.8 ft Sunday through Tuesday, but the big drops come late at night (the low is 9:58 p.m. Sunday and 10:43 p.m. Monday). The only minus tide at Port Chicago is −0.04 ft at 6:33 this morning. Events: NorCal Bass Thursday through Saturday on San Joaquin County water, Sonora Bass Anglers Saturday, California Bass Federation Saturday and Sunday on Sacramento County water, and Modesto Ambassadors Sunday. |
| Upper Kings, above Pine Flat | Below the North Fork: 184 cfs, steady, with the water running 66 to 73°F through the day, per the Corps’ hourly report through 8 a.m. today. Low, clear freestone water. Fish it early, small and quiet. The daily sheet’s natural-flow line was not reported. |
| Lower Kings, below the dam | Release 249 cfs, unchanged for 48 hours on the Corps’ hourly report, down from the 355 we reported last week and 890 two weeks ago. Planted a fourth straight week: it’s on the Oct. 4–10 list in Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties. Wading: low flow doesn’t mean safe. It’s cold tailwater over slick cobble, the release is set at the Water Master’s request, and it can change with little notice. Check the flow before you step in. |
| Kaweah & Tule | Kaweah at Three Rivers 38 cfs (state CDEC gauge, early this morning). The Tule gauges weren’t reported on either sheet. Creek fishing, not river fishing. |
| Kern River | At Kernville, 121 cfs and steady (state CDEC gauge), down from the 182 we printed last week. The release below Isabella averaged 483 cfs Tuesday. No Kern section is on the Oct. 4–10 plant list; Sections 4, 5 and 6 were planted the week before. |
| San Joaquin below Friant | No flow published; the Friant additional-data block reads not-reported. The last number we trust is 375 cfs on Sept. 17, three weeks old. Don’t plan around it. |
| California Aqueduct, San Luis & O’Neill Forebay | No verified current report. The usual fall pattern: catfish on cut bait and dip bait along the canal, stripers in the boils and around the check gates early. This warning holds whatever the reports say: aqueduct water is swift, cold and steep-sided, with no way out. Wear a PFD, fish with somebody, and stay off wet concrete. |
|
◉ Ocean Report & Charters
Boat-by-boat dock totals, Oct. 3–6 (Saturday through Tuesday). Fish-per-rod is our arithmetic from the published angler and fish counts. On multi-day trips the per-rod figure is for the whole trip, not per day; a 2-day boat had two days’ limits to work with. “YFT” = yellowfin only.

| “Rockfish-group” is our sum of the rockfish, bocaccio, copper, bolina and red rockfish the landing lists separately; cabezon and greenling count toward the same 10-fish aggregate. * The count service’s tally comes out a little over 10 a rod, which usually means the angler count is short. We show the arithmetic as published. |

| San Diego daily totals are our sum of the boats listed on the count service, not the service’s own totals, so they aren’t directly comparable with the figures we printed last week. The per-rod figure for multi-day boats covers the whole trip. Inshore half-day boats are on sand bass, calico, barracuda and bonito. |

Catalina & the Island Boats
Nobody named Catalina in writing again this week, so neither will we. The newest 22nd Street reports are all from the Freedom, and all are tuna trips. Oct. 4: “The big big bluefin tuna are around!” Oct. 1: “Another great day of tuna angling!” Neither says where. A Catalina-labeled yellowtail and calico bass post did turn up on SoCalFishReports, dated Aug. 19, 2025, and we threw it out. SoCalFishReports’ newest saltwater posts (Oct. 1–7) and Davey’s Locker’s count page attribute nothing to the island.
22nd Street’s full-day Pursuit keeps posting island-style mixed bags: 21 yellowtail, 14 bonito, 7 barracuda and 7 sand bass on 30 Saturday, and 47 bonito, 10 calico, 4 yellowtail and 4 barracuda on 38 Sunday. The count service doesn’t say where those fish came from, and we won’t guess. If you’re planning an island trip, ask whoever you book with where their boats have been fishing.
Rockfish rules changed Oct. 1 for every SoCal boat, island trips included. From Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, south of Point Conception, nearshore rockfish, cabezon and greenling are closed to boat anglers, and shelf rockfish and lingcod may only be taken seaward of the 50-fathom line. Shore anglers and divers are exempt. Yellowtail, calico, bonito and tuna aren’t affected. Also in force, per CDFW’s Sept. 17 notice: yellowfin 10 a day within the 20-fish general limit, bluefin 2 on top of it, and the emergency rule from Pigeon Point south: no hooks over 1½ inches and no wire leaders for shore anglers or anyone within 1,000 yards of shore. We re-checked all of this against CDFW’s groundfish summary this morning.

⏳ The Season Clock
Salmon: 25 days on the calendar, Pigeon Point to Point Reyes.
Pigeon Point to the U.S./Mexico border: was open Sept. 1–30. Closed since Oct. 1.
38°02′ N (near Point Reyes) to Pigeon Point: open Sept. 1 – Oct. 31. Counting today, Oct. 7 through Oct. 31, 25 days on the calendar, if the guideline holds out.
How many fish are left? The last figure we ever verified is CDFW’s tracker through Sept. 15: 7,585 caught, 12,415 remaining on the shared 20,000-fish guideline, three weeks old. We read the tracker directly this morning and it still shows data only through Sept. 15; CDFW says estimates post after each half-month period ends, and the Sept. 16–30 figure hasn’t appeared. Two weeks ago we worked out that the early-September pace would use up the guideline around Oct. 10. That was our arithmetic, not CDFW’s, and nothing posted since confirms or rules it out. CDFW’s in-season changes page, checked this morning, lists no change to the fall season. Treat Oct. 31 as a ceiling, not a promise.
Two salmon a day, any species except coho, 20-inch minimum. No filleting on the boat. North of Point Conception: two single-point, single-shank barbless hooks, one rod per angler.
Call the hotline the morning you go: (707) 576-3429. Inseason closures can come with only a few days’ notice. That’s what happened to San Francisco in August.
Groundfish Limits
10 rockfish, cabezon and greenling per day, aggregate. Within that: copper 1, canary 2, and vermilion/sunset 2. The vermilion limit is 4 only in the Northern Management Area, north of Cape Mendocino (re-checked this morning against CDFW’s groundfish summary, updated June 23, 2026). Lingcod 2 a day, 22-inch minimum. No retention at any time of quillback, cowcod, yelloweye or bronzespotted.
Depths: Northern, Mendocino, San Francisco and Central areas (everything north of Point Conception) are open at all depths through Dec. 31. Southern area: nearshore species closed; shelf and slope rockfish and lingcod seaward of 50 fathoms only. You must carry a descending device. Cordell Bank: in June, federal managers replaced the old overlapping closures with a single Groundfish Exclusion Area around the core of the bank. All groundfish fishing is prohibited inside it. Check the boundary on CDFW’s Ocean Sport Fishing interactive map before you go.

◉ Tide Tables
Source note: every prediction below is a direct pull from the NOAA CO-OPS prediction API, made this morning for the four stations, Oct. 7–14. We spot-checked all four against last week’s US Harbors tables for Oct. 7 and they match to the minute. One difference: US Harbors rounds Port Chicago’s 6:33 a.m. low today to 0.0, and NOAA’s figure is a hair below zero (−0.04 ft). MLLW datum, local daylight time, heights in feet. H = high, L = low. Minus lows in red.
|
New-moon tides, and the minus lows come at dusk. The Golden Gate’s evening low goes below zero three nights in a row: −0.06 ft Sunday at 6:43 p.m., −0.11 Monday at 7:21 p.m., −0.05 Tuesday at 8:01 p.m. Each follows a 6-foot high that afternoon (Sunday 6.08 ft at 12:18 p.m., Monday 6.03 at 12:46 p.m.), so the swing at the Gate is 6.15 ft Sunday and 6.14 Monday, the biggest of the window. Port Chicago’s only minus is this morning, −0.04 ft at 6:33 a.m. Its swings build to about 4.8 ft Sunday through Tuesday, but its low water comes late at night. Monterey and Port San Luis stay above zero all week; the closest is 0.01 ft at Port San Luis at 2:20 this morning.

◉ Moon Phase & Best Days
Phase computed from the synodic month (29.530588853 days) against the reference new moon of Jan. 6, 2000, 18:14 UTC, and checked against the moon’s true position. Sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset and lunar transits computed for Fresno (36.75°N, 119.77°W), PDT. Solunar majors are the moon overhead and underfoot, listed in the order they fall in the day. Illumination is at local noon. Almanac convention: the best fishing brackets the new and the full moon.
|
This is the good week. The moon is new at about 8:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 by its true position (about 2:14 a.m. Sunday by the mean synodic month). The almanac puts the best fishing around the new and full moons, so every day of this issue sits inside the new-moon bracket, with Friday through Sunday at its center. The next bracket, the full moon, is Oct. 25.
The clock is different at a new moon. The moon rises with the sun and sets with it, so there is no solunar major at dawn all week. The majors fall near midday and midnight (Saturday’s is 12:47 p.m.). What lands on first and last light are the minors, moonrise and moonset: Saturday’s moonrise is 7:07 a.m. against a 7:02 sunrise, and Sunday’s moonset is 6:46 p.m. against a 6:27 sunset. Sunday’s Golden Gate low, −0.06 ft at 6:43 p.m., lands within three minutes of moonset. That is the tide-and-moon overlap of the window, and it comes at dusk.

| Wed Oct. 14 | Waxing crescent, 17% | 3:34a / 4:00p | 7:05a – 6:23p | ●●●○○ Fading |
Major times are computed from lunar transit and are good to within about fifteen minutes. Friday’s second major falls just after midnight, at 12:24 a.m. Saturday. Ratings apply the almanac convention straight, and they’re not a promise. Next week’s issue takes us to the first-quarter moon on Oct. 18.

◉ Fish Stocking Report
CDFW plants are posted as a week range, not a date. This is the list for the week of Oct. 4–10, 2026. All rainbow trout, all CDFW.
| County | Water |
| Fresno | Kings River, below Pine Flat Dam |
| Kings | Kings River, below Pine Flat Dam |
| Tulare | Kings River, below Pine Flat Dam |
| Inyo | Bishop Creek, Middle Fork and South Fork |
| Trinity | Trinity River above Clair Engle, East Fork and Stuart Fork · Coffee Creek · Carrville Dredge Pond |
| Mono / Kern | Nothing on this week’s list |
The listing also files the three Trinity River waters under Humboldt County. They’re in Trinity County, so we list them once.
Still no valley-floor lake on the list. Through the warm months CDFW plants only cold tailwaters and high country, because a hatchery rainbow dropped into a warm valley lake doesn’t live long. That changes as the water cools later in the fall, but we haven’t seen a valley-floor plant posted yet. For now, closest to home: the Kings below Pine Flat, planted four weeks straight, now at 249 cfs. The Kern is off the list this week after three sections went in the week before.
|
◉ Tournament Board
Pulled this morning from the CDFW Fishing Contest permit database, black bass category. Events are approved unless marked pending. Dates and venues can still change at the club’s end.
|
A big Saturday statewide. Fourteen permitted bass events are on the water Saturday, Oct. 10. In the Valley: Golden Empire on Pine Flat and Kerman on Bass Lake Saturday, then Kings VIII on McClure Sunday. Expect crowded ramps at all three. Nothing is permitted on Don Pedro, Millerton, Isabella, Kaweah or Success this weekend. Two corrections from last week: the Oct. 17 Isabella event is gone (Copes Tackle now shows March 20, 2027), and Oro Madre’s Oct. 24 Don Pedro date is now approved.

We read the full permit database this morning, all records, rather than a summary. Tracy Oasis Marina’s next Delta dates after this window are Oct. 16, 22 and 29.
We don’t print last week’s weights. Host clubs post results on no verifiable schedule, and many never post at all, so a results table here would be part fact and part guess. Upcoming permitted events only.

⚠ Heat & Water Safety
Low water on the Kings still makes people bold. The release has held at 249 cfs for two days, so you’ll see crossings and bars you couldn’t reach a couple of weeks ago, and a fourth week of planters on the other side. It’s still cold tailwater over slick cobble, and the release is set by request, so it can go back up. Wear the vest, carry a staff, and check the flow before you cross back.
Don’t eat shellfish from Monterey County. The state health department warned Sept. 14 against eating sport-harvested mussels, clams, scallops or oysters from Monterey County because of domoic acid, and the statewide sport mussel quarantine runs through at least Oct. 31. Anchovy taken from Pigeon Point to Point Lobos is bait only, by CDFW order since Sept. 11. Shellfish line: (800) 553-4133.
The minus tides come at dusk, and the Bay is busy this weekend. The Golden Gate low is −0.06 ft at 6:43 p.m. Sunday, −0.11 at 7:21 p.m. Monday and −0.05 at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday. If you walk a drained flat or reef, carry a real light and start back before the turn. Fleet Week’s Blue Angels fly Friday through Sunday, so expect heavy boat traffic and airshow restrictions on the water.
Young white sharks are still close to shore. The emergency rule from Pigeon Point south, confirmed in CDFW’s Sept. 17 notice, bans big hooks and wire leaders from shore and within 1,000 yards of it. If you hook one, cut the line. Don’t try to land it.
Low lakes, and a blank row isn’t a safe row. Pine Flat 16.4%, Success 11.3%, Kaweah 10.6%, Eastman 6.8%, and Don Pedro, McClure and Shaver each lost thousands of acre-feet this week. Every stump and roadbed that cleared your hull in July is closer to prop depth now. Idle in, watch the sounder, and call the marina before you tow.
Wind and fire season aren’t over. Check road, fire and wind before you head for Shaver, Huntington, the Kaiser Pass lakes, Wishon, or over the hill to the Owens, and know a second way out. Tell somebody where you went and when you’ll be back.
|
|
Three things this week. First, salmon. Pigeon Point to Point Reyes is open through Oct. 31, 25 days counting today, and the Bay boats put 203 kings on 146 rods over the last four days. CDFW’s own tracker still stops at Sept. 15, so nobody outside CDFW knows how many fish are left, and we won’t guess. If you want a king, go soon, and call (707) 576-3429 the morning you go.
Second, Saturday’s new moon. It’s the almanac’s best bracket of the month, and the Golden Gate’s evening lows go below zero Sunday, Monday and Tuesday right at dusk. Bring a light if you’re walking a flat, and know when to turn back.
Third, the lakes. Pine Flat is up 6,617 AF and still only 16.4% full, and Don Pedro, McClure and Shaver all dropped hard this week. Call the marina before you tow.

Moon phase, solunar transits, sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset computed from first principles and checked against the moon’s true position.
What we couldn’t get, and what we corrected: The CDFW salmon tracker has no estimate after Sept. 15, so the fish remaining on the guideline is unknown · Pine Flat’s computed inflow (~900 cfs) doesn’t match the 184 cfs gauge at the head of the lake, and we can’t explain it · Edison is a Sept. 22 figure, and Wishon and Courtright are Sept. 29 figures · No San Joaquin flow below Friant and no Tule flow from any source · No percent-full for Nacimiento or San Antonio; their gauges report elevation only · No verified current report for the Delta, the California Aqueduct, San Luis or O’Neill Forebay, and no Crowley, Owens or June Lake report · We couldn’t confirm the 2026 Eastern Sierra general-season closing date, so we printed none · A listing of 190 bonito “up to 17 pounds” for the Queen of Hearts looks like a typo, so we didn’t repeat the weight · Discarded outright: a Central California fishing column that reads as October 2024, and a Catalina yellowtail post dated Aug. 19, 2025.
Please read: Conditions, seasons, bag limits and closures change, sometimes with a single day’s notice. The 20,000-Chinook fall guideline can close the remaining area early by inseason action. Groundfish depth rules and sublimits change by area and month, and the Southern Management Area changed on Oct. 1. Eastern Sierra waters carry their own special regulations that differ from statewide rules and vary reach by reach on the same river. Everything here is a snapshot of what the public data said when this was written on Wednesday morning. Confirm current regulations with CDFW at wildlife.ca.gov, call the salmon hotline at (707) 576-3429 before an ocean trip, and check ramp access and lake levels with the operating agency before you travel. Where a figure was stale, missing, from a second source or in conflict with another published source, we said so and dated it rather than guessing.
