Report It, Every Time
Unreported theft is invisible theft. Ag crime unit staffing, task force funding, and every number in this report are built on filed reports. If a hundred dollars of wire walks off your well, it still belongs in the record. Call your county sheriff’s ag or rural crime unit, not just your insurance agent.

Statewide Snapshot
Harvest is the most expensive time of year to be robbed. The crop is on the ground or in the trailer, the pumps are running, fuel tanks are full, and every yard in the Valley has equipment sitting out because there is no time to put it away. Thieves know the calendar as well as you do. The pattern this season is consistent statewide: copper first, vehicles and ATVs second, fuel and chemicals third, and the crop itself whenever it’s stacked and unattended.

August Headlines, The Month’s Two Biggest Cases
Serial copper thief arrested after five-month run
From March through July, unincorporated Ventura County took hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and loss from cut communication and copper lines. Detectives out of the Fillmore, Moorpark and Ojai stations tracked it to one man. On August 5 they served a search warrant in the North Hills area of Los Angeles County and arrested Marvin Moises Colindres-Perez, seizing evidence tying him to the thefts. He was booked on conspiracy, grand theft of copper and cutting a utility line, with bail set at $170,000.
Why it matters: this was a corridor worked over five months, not a one-night hit, and the man cutting your line may be living two counties away.

Ag Task Force breaks up 500-vase cemetery metal ring
Five people were arrested for stripping roughly 500 bronze vases from Fresno Memorial Gardens Cemetery between April and the end of July. Because metal was involved, the Sheriff’s Ag Task Force ran the investigation and closed it alongside the county’s Adult Compliance Team. Retail value of what was taken tops $40,000. The recyclers paid the thieves about $15,000. None of the vases were recovered.
Why it matters: that ratio is the whole problem with metal theft, and it is why the ag task force is the unit that answers a wire call.
The through-line in both cases: the thief collects a fraction of what the victim loses, and it takes a stack of reports before a pattern is visible. Fresno’s case ran four months and roughly 500 separate thefts before it closed; Ventura’s ran five. If you get hit once, file it, you may be report number six in a case somebody is already building. Fresno’s Ag Task Force tip line is (559) 600-8150.

Figures above are the most recent multi-year totals published by county ag crime units. Treat every number in this report as a floor, not a ceiling, investigators statewide say a large share of ag theft is never reported at all.
Still the number one target in every reporting county. Thieves pull wire from ag well pumps and electrical panels in minutes; the repair takes weeks. In July, Tulare County detectives recovered roughly 185 lbs of suspected stolen copper in a single traffic stop, including about 20 lbs of brass irrigation valves. One south Tulare County farm was hit twice in 48 hours for over $20,000 in damage. Cordless reciprocating saws have made this a two-minute job.
| 🚚 Vehicles & ATVs |
Trend #2 |
The single biggest dollar category. Tractors, passenger vehicles, UTVs and trailers accounted for $13.5 million of Fresno County’s reported loss over three years. Kern reports ATVs near the top of its list. Keys left in the ignition and a trailer parked at the turnrow are still how most of them leave. Equipment-tracking vendors put recovery of untracked assets below 15%, treat that as a sales figure if you like, but no county unit we found disputes the direction of it.
| ⛽ Fuel & Chemicals |
Rising |
Both of these usually mean somebody knew where to look. In June, Madera and Fresno detectives closed Operation Round Up and recovered roughly $150,000 in stolen ag chemicals, arresting four. In late July a Merced–Madera investigation ended in an arrest over more than 500 gallons of tax-exempt red diesel. Investigators openly suspect inside knowledge in chemical cases, current or former employees who know the delivery schedule.
| 🍑 The Crop Itself |
Seasonal |
Commodity theft takes a buyer, which means it takes planning. Fresno and Tulare ag detectives made arrests in early July over ongoing stone fruit thefts, one stop turned up a trailer loaded with roughly 2,000 lbs of fruit in crates. Tree nuts follow the same rule: the vulnerable window is not on the tree, it’s between the sweeper and the huller. Anything stacked, staged, or on a trailer overnight is the target.
New this year, AB 476 is in force. California’s expanded metal theft law took effect January 1, 2026. It tightens documentation requirements on both sides of a scrap metal transaction, restricts possession of certain identifiable metals, and raises penalties, with fines reaching $5,000 in some cases. What it means for you: mark and photograph your wire, panels and irrigation hardware. Documentation is what turns a recovered coil of copper into a chargeable case.

Section 3
County Briefs
Region 1, Southern San Joaquin Valley
$30 million in reported ag loss over 2022–2024, with $8 million recovered. Copper peaked at $3.1 million in 2023 and eased to $2.6 million in 2024, still the headline crime. Ag vehicles are the biggest dollar bucket at $13.5 million over that span. This season the Ag Crime Task Force has worked a Huron irrigation-well copper case with about $40,000 in damage, joint ag-chemical burglary arrests with Madera, and stone fruit thefts out of the Reedley–Orange Cove corridor.
Watch: well panels, wire runs, staged bins, chemical sheds.
More than $1 million in reported losses between January and September 2025, and the sheriff’s office says that excludes many incidents never reported. The Ag Crimes Unit runs four detectives, a sergeant and a lieutenant covering cattle, copper, tree nuts, tractors and fuel. July brought a traffic stop that recovered roughly 185 lbs of suspected stolen copper and brass, and a south county farm hit twice inside 48 hours for over $20,000 in pump damage.
Watch: well pumps, brass valves, cattle, staged nut trailers.
The Sheriff’s Rural Crime Investigations Unit reports thefts almost daily. Copper wire and ATVs sit at the top of the list, followed by tractors and farm vehicles. Investigators describe most of it as deliberate rather than opportunistic, crews scouting isolated ground for irrigation wells, ATVs and citrus operations, then coming back when they know nobody is there.
Watch: remote wells, ATVs, citrus blocks, unlit equipment yards.
Overall ag crime is down on the back of arrests, but copper is not. The Rural Crime Unit reported more than $400,000 in copper losses during 2025, most of it off ag well pumps, and flags cordless reciprocating saws as the tool that made it easy. The unit worked the Huron case jointly with Fresno and has arrested crews running multi-county ag burglary sprees. Remote corners of the county, where patrol is thinnest, take the worst of it.
Watch: well pumps on outlying ground, panel boxes, night access roads.
Region 2, Northern San Joaquin Valley
Ag chemical burglaries were the story this summer. On June 4, Madera investigators and Fresno ag crime detectives closed Operation Round Up, recovering roughly $150,000 in stolen ag chemicals along with a firearm, and booking four suspects. Madera also partnered on the red diesel case that ran into Merced County.
Watch: chemical storage, delivery-day staging, bulk fuel tanks.
Fuel is the local pressure point. A two-month investigation into diesel theft from ag operations ended July 28 with an arrest tied to more than 500 gallons of tax-exempt red diesel taken from farmers across Merced and Madera counties. Dairy and equipment losses round out the county’s reporting.
Watch: bulk fuel tanks, pump meters, dairy shops, night fill-ups.
Almond and walnut harvest makes this a load-theft county for the next ten weeks. Stanislaus sits inside the eight-county Central Valley Rural Crime Prevention Task Force, which pools investigators across San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare and Kern, the reason multi-county crews keep getting caught here.
Watch: loaded trailers left overnight, huller yards, irrigation hardware.
Freight corridors are the complication here. Ground that touches I-5, Highway 99 and the Port of Stockton gives thieves a fast, anonymous way out with a trailer. Equipment and trailer theft dominate, and the county anchors the northern end of the Central Valley task force.
Watch: trailers, hitch locks, yard gates near highway access.
The rental-fraud playbook showed up here in force. Sheriff’s Ag Crimes detectives worked a ring renting equipment under false identities and fraudulent credit cards, then reselling it. An undercover operation in May stopped an attempted $37,000 mini-excavator rental; a follow-up search in Prunedale turned up a skid steer stolen from a Salinas dealer, a forklift and a restroom trailer, roughly $300,000 recovered. A separate case cleared more than $50,000 in copper wire thefts.
Watch: verify every rental ID; copper on pump stations and coolers.
Tractor and fruit theft on the Oxnard Plain and up the Santa Clara River, plus the month’s biggest copper case. A Fillmore man was arrested in February for a series of ag thefts across the county, and on August 5 detectives closed a five-month serial copper and communication-line investigation (see August Headlines above). Ventura has a long history of organized tractor-theft rings working its citrus and avocado ground, and its high-value tree fruit makes commodity theft worth a thief’s time.
Watch: tractors left in blocks, avocado and citrus picks, tool trailers.
| Santa Barbara & SLO |
Elevated |
Berry, vegetable and wine grape ground with long, unlit field edges. Losses run to hand tools, irrigation hardware, harvest carts and fuel rather than headline equipment. Wine grape harvest starting now puts bins, gondolas and crush-yard equipment in play through October.
Watch: drip and sprinkler hardware, bins, crew tool trailers.
| San Benito & Santa Cruz |
Elevated |
Smaller acreage, same crews. The organized rings working Monterey County do not stop at the county line, and Watsonville-area berry ground sees steady losses of irrigation components, pumps and field tools. Arrests in the Pajaro Valley this year involved ag-related property recovered across jurisdictions.
Watch: pump houses, drip line, portable generators.
Region 4, Sacramento Valley, Delta & North Bay
| Yolo, Solano & Sacramento |
Elevated |
Orchard equipment is walking out of Delta-edge ground. Yolo deputies recovered about $20,000 in stolen farm equipment in March, an ATV and a sprayer taken from one orchard and abandoned in another. That pattern (steal here, stage there) is common where orchards back up to levee roads and public access.
Watch: ATVs, sprayers, levee-road access points, fuel.
| Butte, Glenn, Colusa & Sutter |
Elevated |
Rice and orchard country, and the state’s worst hive-theft corridor. Beehive theft is a February crime, but it is planned now, California beekeepers report roughly an 87% rise in hive thefts since 2013, with about 10,000 hives stolen and losses topping $3.5 million. Growers and beekeepers who plan to brand, GPS-tag and photograph pallets should be doing it before hives move for almond bloom.
Watch: hive pallets, rice harvest equipment, fuel, orchard ATVs.
Crush season opens the highest-value window of the year. Sonoma runs a dedicated Rural Crimes Task Force. Vineyard equipment, bins, forklifts and finished wine all become targets between now and November, and barrel and case theft from small wineries continues to be underreported.
Watch: crush pad equipment, forklifts, finished-goods storage.
| Far North & Foothills |
Monitor |
Livestock and hay, with long response times. Tehama, Shasta, Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen and the Sierra foothill counties see cattle and hay theft more than equipment rings. CDFA’s Bureau of Livestock Identification runs the state brand program, and peace officers have statutory authority to stop any vehicle hauling cattle or horses for inspection. A registered brand is still the single best recovery tool in cattle country.
Watch: brand registration current, gates, hay stacks, remote water.
Region 5, Southern California & Desert
Irrigation hardware is the target of choice. A Holtville man was arrested May 10 after two separate incidents took roughly 450 sprinkler heads, about $3,100, from an operation on McConnell Road. Individually small, cumulatively expensive, and the kind of loss most operations do not report.
Watch: sprinkler heads, gated pipe, valves, hay stacks.
| Riverside, San Bernardino & San Diego |
Elevated |
Urban edge is the whole problem. Riverside runs a Rural Crime Team inside the statewide task force and San Bernardino has a dedicated Rural Crimes detail. Hay, dates, citrus, avocado and nursery stock all move easily into nearby urban resale markets, and trespass and dumping ride alongside the theft reports.
Watch: perimeter gates, avocado and citrus picks, nursery yards.

Section 4
Prevention Playbook
Nobody secures a whole farm. The goal is narrower and achievable: make your operation slower and louder than the one down the road. Every sheriff’s unit we looked at gave the same short list, cameras, lighting, locks, trackers, and documentation.
The Harvest-Season Checklist
Eleven things worth doing before the next load goes out
| ✓ Alarm the panel, don’t just film the yard. A tamper alarm on well panels, conduit and electrical service stops the theft; a driveway camera documents it. |
| ✓ Put a tracker on anything with wheels. Untracked equipment rarely comes back. Solar units need no wiring and no charging. |
| ✓ Light the approach. Motion-triggered lighting at panels, shops and staging areas costs almost nothing and changes the risk calculation for a thief on foot. |
| ✓ Pull the keys. Every time. Opportunistic theft is still a large share of the total, and an ATV with keys in it is the easiest score on any ranch. |
| ✓ Never leave chemicals in the field overnight. Every unit that answered on this said the same thing, unprompted. |
| ✓ Vary your delivery and staging routine. Chemical thieves are suspected of using insider knowledge of schedules. Predictability is the vulnerability. |
| ✓ Lock and meter the fuel tank. Red diesel theft is measured in hundreds of gallons before anybody notices. A weekly meter reading catches it in days. |
| ✓ Mark and photograph your metal. Under AB 476 documentation is what makes a case. Etch panels, log serials, photograph wire runs and irrigation hardware. |
| ✓ Don’t stage loads overnight. The vulnerable window for crops and nuts is between the field and the secure facility, not on the tree. |
| ✓ Verify every equipment rental identity. Fraudulent rental is now a standing method in coastal counties, ID, credit card and callback. |
| ✓ Report it, then tell your neighbors. Crews work corridors, not single ranches. The call that saves the next place is the one you make tonight. |
The latest in prevention, the category is moving from evidence to interruption. For twenty years the answer to ag theft was a camera, and a camera hands you a video of your own robbery. The systems growers are installing now sit on the asset itself and go off the moment somebody touches it, siren, light, and a phone alert while the thief is still standing there. That shift matters most on copper, where the metal is worth a few hundred dollars and the damage runs into six figures. We’re featuring one of these systems in Section 5. Whatever you choose, buy the one that makes noise, not just the one that keeps a file.

A camera gives you a video of your own robbery. This gives you a chance to stop it. COP-R-LOCK was built by Porterville ag crimes officer Bobby Rader after sixteen years of never once arriving at a copper theft in progress. The trigger sensor rides in the conduit and on the panel, open the panel or cut the wire and the siren, the light, the camera and your phone all go off at the same moment. Farmblox reports growers on their system have watched thieves walk up with bolt cutters and leave without touching anything.
| ✓ Pinpoints which site is being hit, not just that something happened |
| ✓ Onsite siren and light plus camera recording triggered by the tamper event |
| ✓ Alerts multiple cell numbers in real time; auto law-enforcement notice in development |
| ✓ Separate kits for electrical, water and irrigation, fence line, solar, wind machines and chemical or fertilizer tanks |
| ✓ System ships as Base Station, Solar Kit, Universal Monitor, Trigger Sensor and Alarm Kit |
| ✓ Same platform also reads tank levels, soil moisture, pump pressure and weather |
| ✓ Labeled for tree nuts, citrus, avocados, vineyards, berries and row ground |
The math. Farmblox puts repair cost on a hit well between $20,000 and $300,000 before you count the missed irrigation, and reported setups have run under $4,000. One dairyman on their site describes losing wire off a single well four separate times, about $100,000. Get a written quote for your own sites; systems are configured per site and pricing moves.

This Month in American History
August 1866, The Law That Followed the Cattle
Through the summer of 1866, the first great cattle drives pushed north out of Texas toward the railheads in Kansas. Roughly a quarter of a million head moved that season alone. It was the birth of the American beef industry, and, almost immediately, of the American cattle thief.
Ranchers answered with the simplest, most durable anti-theft technology ever devised: a registered brand. A mark burned into the hide, recorded in a county book, readable by anyone. Brand inspectors met the herds at the railhead and read every animal. It worked because the mark could not be pried off, resold, or explained away.
A hundred and sixty years later, California still runs the same system through the Bureau of Livestock Identification, and peace officers still have the authority to stop a truck hauling cattle and read the brands. The principle has not changed either. Mark what is yours, write it down, and make it provable. Etched serial numbers, GPS logs and asset maps are just the 2026 version of a hot iron and a county ledger.
⚖
Under the California Food and Agricultural Code, any peace officer may stop a vehicle hauling cattle or horses for the purpose of making an investigation, and must document any reported loss or theft to the Bureau of Livestock Identification.

To the Men & Women of Our Armed Forces and First Responders
This issue is about people who take what is not theirs, so it is the right issue to thank the ones who stand between them and the rest of us. To the ag crime detectives working turnrows at two in the morning, to the deputies covering a thousand square miles alone, to the men and women in uniform overseas and the crews on the engine and in the ambulance: your watch is why we can plant, grow, and build in peace. We remember those who gave everything, and we thank those who still stand watch.
You are the reason we are Safe and Free.

This one comes straight from the field, cut wire at a well head, an empty spot where a trailer sat, a fuel tank that reads lower than the hours do. It is a rotten thing to be robbed in the middle of harvest, and we won’t dress it up. We’d rather you hear it from someone who shares your sunrises, your sunsets, and the long day in between. That’s the promise behind every B Mello report.
